Download the Organ Donor Card

Just last week, my sister-in-law texted me and several other contacts on her phone book for help finding a kidney donor for her friend's 19-year old niece, who is in critical condition and needed a kidney transplant ASAP. The list at the NKTI is backed up for miles; it's hard to find a suitable kidney donor. That's reality, Philippines is a country with a rich gastronomic culture, but we also don't take very good care of ourselves.  Our staples, while delectable, are usually high in sodium and/or sugar.  Thus, topping the list of national ailments are kidney-related health problems, which the DOH is ill-equipped to handle.

What can you and I do to help?   Well, number one: we should do a better job at keeping healthy and help others live a healthy lifestyle, too.  Number two: fill up an Organ Donor card.

But, first, please watch this:

Earlier this year, DOH Secretary Enrique Ona together with the NGO Human Organ Preservation Effort (HOPE) turned to Facebook's social network to spread the word about becoming an organ donor. Did you know that you can become an organ donor right now? It's really easy!  Just click through this Facebook photo album and read this Info page (very short read, I promise you) for the why and how.

It's as easy as 1-2-3, literally.

1. Download the card from here or here and print it out.
2. Fill it up. You can choose to donate other organs, not just your kidneys.
3. Have 2 witnesses sign it.

Important: Keep your Organ Donor card on you at all times.

If you need some motivation to become an organ donor, watch Seven Pounds :-)  Better yet, click here to browse through the inspirational stories of people who got a second chance at life.  I've just filled up my own organ donor card and so have these people.

For more information, please get in touch with HOPE via their website.
